For most skincare products, you do not need to wait between steps. Apply one product, let it spread across your skin for a few seconds, and move on to the next. The idea that you must wait 10 or 20 minutes between every layer is a myth that makes routines unnecessarily long. The main exception is active ingredients like vitamin C, retinol, and chemical exfoliants, which work best at a specific pH and benefit from a short pause before you layer anything on top. Outside of those, just go step by step through your skincare routine at a normal pace.
The General Rule: No Wait Needed
Serums, moisturizers, and most treatment products absorb quickly enough that you can apply them back to back. Your skin does not need several minutes to "absorb" each layer. As long as the previous product is not literally dripping off your face, you are fine to continue.
A good test: if the product feels mostly settled into your skin (not sitting wet on the surface), apply the next one. This usually takes about 10 to 30 seconds.
When Waiting Actually Matters
Some ingredients perform better when given a moment to work before you cover them with another product. Here are the main ones:
Vitamin C Serums
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid specifically) works at a low pH. Layering a higher-pH product on top immediately can reduce its effectiveness. Wait about 1 to 2 minutes after applying vitamin C before moving to your next step. You can use this time to brush your teeth or get dressed as part of your morning routine.
Retinol and Retinoids
Retinol does not strictly require a wait time, but many people find it less irritating if they let it sit for a minute or two before applying moisturizer. If your skin tolerates retinol well, you can apply moisturizer right after. If you are still adjusting, a short pause helps. This is especially relevant during your nighttime routine.
AHAs and BHAs (Chemical Exfoliants)
Chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid or salicylic acid are pH-dependent. Wait 1 to 2 minutes before applying anything else. This gives the acid time to lower your skin's pH and start working before you neutralize the environment with your next product.
How Long to Wait: Quick Reference
- Cleanser to toner: No wait. Apply to damp skin.
- Toner to serum: No wait.
- Vitamin C serum: Wait 1-2 minutes before next step.
- AHA/BHA exfoliant: Wait 1-2 minutes before next step.
- Retinol: Optional 1-2 minute wait, especially if you experience irritation.
- Serum to moisturizer: No wait (unless serum is an active listed above).
- Moisturizer to sunscreen: Wait until moisturizer feels absorbed, usually about 1 minute.
The Sunscreen Step
Sunscreen should be the last step in your morning routine. Let your moisturizer absorb for about a minute before applying sunscreen so it does not slide around or pill. For help picking one, see our guide on how to choose a sunscreen. Once sunscreen is applied, wait 2 to 3 minutes before putting on makeup if you wear it. This lets the sunscreen form a proper film.
Debunking the 20-Minute Wait Myth
You may have read that you should wait 20 to 30 minutes between every skincare step. This comes from a misunderstanding of clinical studies where researchers tested individual ingredients in isolation. In real-world use, these long waits are not necessary and are not practical for most people.
The research shows that 1 to 2 minutes is sufficient for pH-dependent actives. For everything else, just let the product sink in for a few seconds. A routine should not take 45 minutes. If it does, you are either using too many products or waiting longer than you need to.
